«INROCK» magazine and «ARTBEAT MUSIC» cultural fund PRESENTS:
THE TANGENT (UK) at the progressive rock festival «INPROG’2011»

11.11.11 Moscow, club «B2»
12.11.11 Yaroslavl, club «Avangard»
13.11.11 St.Petersburg, club «Jagger»

Progressive rock festival «INPROG» was founded by «InRock» magazine at the year 2001.

The main idea of the festival was (and is) to support Russian progressive rock scene, to help promising local musicians to evolve and to feel the connection with leading foreign progsters. Therefore, the lineups of the festival was always a mix of best local talents + one or two foreign «stars». We’ve invited to Russia such great bands as The Flower Kings, Beardfish, Samla Mammas Manna, Hidria Spacefolk and Nightingale. Speaking of Russian musicians, we proud to mention such participants as Arsenal, Kvadro, Azazello, Kostarev Group, Vespero, Jazzator, Apple Pie… and many more.

11.11.2011 marks exactly the Tenth Anniversary of the festival. Looking forward such a jubilee, we joined forces with Cultural Fund «ArtBeat», founded by Alexey Kozlov, leader of famous Russian jazz band Arsenal. «ArtBeat» recently organized some successful events, mostly in Jazz field – like Fuzzion Day festival with Oz Noy as a headliners.

We proud to announce the headliner of all gigs (and this time the festival extends to 3 cities: Moscow, Yaroslavl and St.Petersburg). It will be renowned British prog band The Tangent, which just recently released their sixth studio album «COMM» on InsideOut label.
Accompanied by two experienced Russian prog outfits – Kostarev Group and Uphill Work, they will play at all of this mini-tour gigs, together with Cracked Rombix (Moscow), Introspective F.M. (Yaroslavl) and Roz Vitalis (S.-Petersburg).

THE TANGENT

The Tangent was formed in 2002 by members of British and Swedish bands: Parallel Or 90 Degrees and The Flower Kings respectively. It’s worth to mention that England is, by all accounts, a Motherland of progressive rock, and Sweden is responsible to the genre’s resurrection in 1990s.
Debute album «The Music That Died Alone» (2003) became a prog rock sensation; later on Swedish ‘fraction’ slowly dissolved, leaving the way to all-British lineup. However, Andy Tillison, keyboardist/singer/composer of the band, consider it as the best ever. He’ll prove it to us soon – in November.

KOSTAREV GROUP (Moscow)

«Ginger-bearded raging Bacchus armed with a green piece of wood» – such is the typical listener’s description of Alexander Kostarev after seeing him in action. «Piece of wood», of course, is his favorite (and irreplaceable) guitar, which he uses for fantasmagoric sounds and psychodelic noise pollution by the way of tapping, scratching and so on. He can play as well.
Kostarev is a veteran of the scene: his journey into music has started at 1997, in then-Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), later he collaborated with Sergey Kuryokhin, Sergey Letov, «Romen» theater, and the bands of various names that nobody knows.
The Kostarev Group lineup is shifting rapidly, with the only mainstay is Alexander and the keyboardist Ekaterina Morozova (in «regular life» – music school teacher). Lately some sort of stability was achieved when Tatyana «The River» Rechnaya joined on flute and saxophone. And most recently, the band welcomed violinist Alexandra Demyanova and drummer Philipp Sokha.
The list of former players included Bozzio-influenced drummer (and owner of Russian Presidental Award by his achievements in chemistry) Andrey Bobrovsky, violin/tabla player Gennady Lavrentiev and cellist Taisia Bykova (The Elephant).
The music of the band combines sounds and styles of various eras, including two (!) Concerto Grossos. Cold mathematical design, undeniable professionalism mixes with shamanic drive and titanic level of energy.
First official release of Kostarev Group was live album, titled simply «Live at InProg-2003». In 2006, a retrospective collection «Works» was released. Now Alexander works on his debut (!) studio album «Vegetarian», which may secure him a place in Guinness Book of Records as the oldest progresssive rock musician to release debute studio album.

UPHILL WORK (Moscow)

Uphill Work – «reasonably experimental», as they call it themselves, rock band from Moscow. They idea is to mix together prog-rock and more traditional and mass-appealing pop music, trying to find a balance with intricate rhythms and catchy melodies. Their discography so far includes two albums: «Counterclockwise» (2009) and «Dribs/Drabs» (2010), both on «Soyuz Music». Uphill Work lineup includes keyboards/vocal, guitar, bass guitar and drums, with accent on traditional piano sounds. The band performed at the festivals Avant-2009 and Empty Hills-2010 & 2011, and on numerous club gigs in Moscow.
The band tries to provide a link between a highly restricted clan of prog orthodoxes and merry party goers who enjoys Uphill Work more as a stylish band with good English lyrics, cheering «indie kids» from a Swinging London. Overall, band’s output has a positive feel, it sounds concise, with accent on the piano, elegant melodies and slightly tongue-in-cheek intonations. Uphill Work’s alter-ego is, probably, Harlequin who is sick of entertaining people, or maybe Winnie The Pooh suddenly turning serious, still singing his trademark «poo-rum-pum-pum», but doing business more risky than just robbing bees of their honeycombs.
Additionally, some of you might know a singer Lev Gankine as a renowned journalist who works on Moscow’s Radio Culture.
Especially for InProg festival Gankine & Co. are working on impressive 20-minute prog epic «Snowing Down South».

CRACKED ROMBIX (Moscow)

Cracked Rombix is a duo from Moscow: Dmitry Pavlyukov (guitar) and Dmirty Oslyakov (drums & effects). «Urban music with no words», — such is their self-description. Sharp and thunderous avant-rock/fusion/guitar instrumental in the vein of later King Crimson multiplied with Steve Vai and Happy Family. Making no difference between studio and live situation, Cracked Rombix are always getting loose and enjoys some cheerful craziness. Guitar processors makes duo sound like there is a dozen guys on stage!

INTROSPECTIVE F.M. (Yaroslavl)

The title might be interpreted as a «Radio of Inner Soul», but initially the band was named Kilgore Trout. It’s a fourpiece (two guitars, bass, drums) that plays instrumental prog/fusion. «We like classical music, chamber avantgarde, fusion, blues, progressive and classic rock, — the band describes themselves. – Getting through the prism of self-interpretation, all these influences portrays live energy of the band and our composing and improvising style».
«I’d like to mention the guitar player Alexey Evlanov, his soul-touching inspiring passages; the second guitar player sometimes imitates violin sound; and the drummer Sergey Zaitsev surely got a jazz roots – it’s clear from his hi-hat gentle whispering…» – wrote the listeners after some IFM concert.
It’s important to mention that Introspective F.M. are the organizers of «Yaroslavl InProg» festival, that happened twice (!) in year 2010.

ROZ VITALIS (Санкт-Петербург)

The band from S.-Petersburg was formed in year 2001 as a one-man-band studio project of keyboardist and composer Ivan Rozmainsky. Now, after dozen of lineup changes, it evolved into real live outfit, including two keyboardists, two guitar players, two drummers, one bassist and one flutist. Music combines classic sympho prog rock, post rock, avant rock; the voice utilizes both singing and theatre-like narration. «The music of Roz Vitalis is about things Untold and Incomprehensible, and especially about a yearning of Inapproachable Light», — tells Ivan.
Also Ivan Rozmainsky constantly organize local St.Petersburg prog events like «Saint Peter Prog Fest». Roz Vitalis has played on Baltic Prog Fest’2010 in Lithuania. Their new studio album «Revelator» (2011) is out on MALS label.
